Traditional Techniques versus TWAF Thinking

Tradition: 

The handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs and information from generation to generation, especially by word of mouth or by practice, long-established or inherited way of thinking or acting.

Many current practises used by teachers today have been around for decades.  Why are these practises still in use?

Is it for convenience, is it teachers managing students rather than students managing themselves, is it because teachers are in a comfort zone and not prepared to take on board new strategies or have no knowledge of new strategies , is it traditional?
